Begin gently
Choose a quiet moment and a tool suited to your cat’s coat. Offer a few gentle strokes, watch their reaction and stop before they become distressed. Longer coats often need more regular attention than short coats.
Look as well as brush
Notice new skin changes, bald patches or areas your cat avoids having touched. Do not pull at tight mats or cut close to the skin; ask your vet or a suitable groomer for help.
Keep the routine realistic
Add a grooming reminder if it helps. A sudden change in grooming, including excessive licking or a newly unkempt coat, is worth discussing with your vet.
